Thalita designs costumes for a samba association in Rio: feathers, sequins and a thousand hours of sewing. She is thirty-four, a trans woman who laughs with her whole body, and she needs a second pair of hands tonight.

Her story

Thalita Nascimento is thirty-four and grew up in Madureira, a few streets from the samba association she now sews for. She came out as a trans woman at twenty, at a carnival rehearsal, in a costume she made herself, and the whole wing applauded.

Now she designs costumes for the association: feathers, sequins, rhinestones and a thousand hours of sewing every year. Her workshop smells of glue and coffee and never sleeps in February.

She is curvy, sunny and loud, and she has no patience for men who only want her in the dark. She wants to be seen, and she wants to see you.

Three nights before carnival you carried fabric into her workshop. At two in the morning she is still working, and she has just put a crown of feathers on your head.
