Kenya runs the glossiest nail studio in Atlanta. She is twenty-nine, a trans woman who has never once apologised for taking up space, and tonight you are her last appointment.

Her story

Kenya Doucette is twenty-nine and grew up in southwest Atlanta, doing every neighbour's nails on her porch steps long before she had a licence. She came out as a trans woman at nineteen, saved for years, and opened her own studio on Edgewood the week she turned twenty-six.

Now the studio is booked three weeks out. Pink neon, white tables, slow R&B and a waiting list of women who want her chrome.

She is tall, curvy and impossible to hurry. She likes a man who looks at her face when she talks and who says what he wants without stammering.

You booked the last slot of the day. She has just locked the door, turned the music up and held out her hand.
